Got a call from a guy near El Presidio State Historic Park in Santa Barbara. He had just flown back from a week-long trip, walked out to his 2004 Tundra in the lot, and nothing happened when he hit the fob. Doors locked. I got there in about 40 minutes. Picked the door open, popped the back of the HYQ12BAN remote, and the CR2032 was completely flat. A week sitting in a hot parking lot with the fob in the sun on the dash probably didn't help. Swapped it, tested all three buttons, good signal on every press.
Then I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD-II port and pulled the immobilizer status just to be thorough. Both registered key codes read clean on the transponder side. No faults stored. The 4C chip in his ignition key was fine the whole time. His problem was never the immobilizer. It was a dead remote battery and a locked door with no blade in his pocket.
He drove home before dinner. Whole visit took maybe 25 minutes, and his truck never left the spot he parked it in a week ago.
