2004 Toyota Tundra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the actual work take once you're at my truck?

Depends on what the job is. A battery swap and contact clean on the fob is maybe five minutes at the truck. Adding a key to this generation Tundra takes longer because the immobilizer has a timed registration cycle built in. All-keys-lost adds another step on top of that. Either way, you're looking at under an hour of actual work at your vehicle.

Q: Can you get to my vehicle faster than the dealer can get me in?

Almost always, yes. The technical work itself takes the same amount of time regardless of who's doing it. The difference is everything surrounding it. Dealer workflows involve appointment slots, repair orders, parts counters, and waiting for a certified tech to free up. The actual programming on a 2004 Tundra is a fraction of the total visit time at a dealership. We cut out all of that.

Q: My 2004 Tundra starts fine but the fob range dropped way off. Is the fob dying?

Short range on this generation is almost always the CR2032 going weak before it dies outright. These fobs will still send a signal on a low battery, just not very far. Owners on Tundra forums report having to stand right next to the door before it responds. Swap the battery first. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't restore range, check that the battery is seated flat against both contacts.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 Tundra. Will it just work?

Not without programming. An unprogrammed fob won't communicate with the truck's security system. It needs to be registered before it does anything. The 2004 Tundra does have an onboard add-a-key procedure that works under the right conditions, meaning you still have at least one working programmed key. All-keys-lost is a different situation and needs diagnostic equipment. Either way, the fob you bought online is just a shell until it gets paired.

2004 Toyota Tundra Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy came back from a week-long trip, walked out to the airport cell phone lot with his bags, and his 2004 Tundra just sat there. No response to the fob. Doors locked. He reached into his bag for the key and remembered the bag had been in the cab the whole time he was gone. He was standing in the sun with luggage and nowhere to go.

The dealer could see him Thursday. It was Tuesday. He found EZ Car Keyz and asked if I could come out to the lot.

I got there in about 40 minutes. Got the door open, swapped the CR2032, and checked that the contacts were seated clean. The fob came right back. The truck had never had a programming issue at all. The remote just went dark from a drained battery, the way they do when a vehicle sits for a week in summer heat.

He drove home that afternoon. Saved what would have been a multi-day wait at the dealer, plus tow fees he was already mentally calculating. The truck never left the parking space he pulled into seven days earlier.

The whole thing took less time than the shuttle ride from his terminal to the economy lot.

Toyota Tundra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key or fob help after hours or on the weekend?▼

Most Toyota dealer service departments close by 5 PM on weekdays and run limited hours or nothing on Sundays. If your fob dies or your key goes missing on a Saturday evening, you're sitting until Monday at the earliest. We work outside dealer hours and can reach you in the Funk Zone or anywhere else in Santa Barbara without an appointment queue. One call and we figure out timing from there.
