2013 Toyota Tundra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the whole job take once you get to my truck?

For a standard add-a-key on a 2013 Tundra, plan on roughly 20 to 30 minutes at the vehicle. That covers decoding or measuring the cut, cutting the new key, and running the transponder programming through the OBD port. If it is an all-keys-lost situation, add time for the immobilizer reset cycle before new keys can be enrolled. Either way, you are not sitting in a waiting room. The work happens right next to your truck.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

The programming itself takes roughly the same amount of time regardless of who does it. What I cut out is everything wrapped around that. No appointment wait, no repair order queue, no holding for a certified tech to free up, no parts department run. Dealer visits for a key that takes 15 minutes of actual work can easily stretch to two hours because of internal workflow. Same result, none of the overhead.

Q: I bought a key blank online. Can you just program it, or does it have to be your blank?

This comes up a lot with Tundra owners who find blanks online for a few dollars. Here is the issue: not every blank sold online for this truck carries a transponder chip that is actually compatible with Toyota's immobilizer system. Some are clone chips, some are aftermarket chips of varying quality, and some blanks that look identical externally are cut for a different keyway entirely. I carry blanks I have tested and trust.

Q: My Tundra starts fine sometimes and then acts up other times. Could the key be failing?

Yes, and it is more common than people expect on keys that are ten-plus years old. An intermittent no-start that clears on its own usually points to one of two things: a chip in the key head that is starting to delaminate or lose its signal, or a worn blade that is not turning the cylinder cleanly enough to hold the key in the read position.

2013 Toyota Tundra Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked along the water over in Ventura Harbor on a different job when the call came in. A woman at an assisted living facility nearby needed a spare key for her 2013 Tundra.

She had one working key and her son had been after her for months to get a backup made. He lived out of state and the nearest Toyota dealer was a highway drive she did not feel comfortable making on her own.

She had one key left and was not about to risk losing it without a backup in hand.

I drove over to the facility lot when I finished up. The Tundra was sitting right outside the entrance. I decoded the lock cylinder to pull the exact cut, verified it against the key she had, and cut two new keys from the right blank on site. Then I programmed the transponder chip in each one through the OBD port so the truck would recognize them. Both keys started the truck on the first try.

She watched the whole thing from the shade near the entrance door. Did not have to get in the car, did not have to navigate a freeway, did not have to call her son to fly out and take her. Total time in that lot was under forty minutes.

The dealer quote she had gotten over the phone was for a single key, and it was a number that made her hesitate long enough to call around. She got two keys from me for less than what they wanted for one. That part she mentioned twice.

Toyota Tundra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key made after hours or on the weekend?▼

Most Toyota dealer service departments wrap up by 5 PM on weekdays and run limited or no hours on Sundays. Lose your only key on a Saturday night and you are looking at Monday at the earliest, plus whatever their next available appointment slot is after that. I work outside those hours. If you are in Ventura or the Ventura Harbor area and your 2013 Tundra is sitting dead in a lot, call me.
