I got a call around 5:30 in the morning from a guy parked at a supply store in Thille/Montalvo. He worked a crew job and his shift started at 6. His Tundra had been sitting overnight, and when he walked out in the dark, the remote head key had gone completely dead -- no lock, no unlock, nothing. He hit the door handle, tried the key against the ignition, and got a key-not-detected warning on the dash. The truck wouldn't wake up. His crew was already loading across town.

The remote head key battery was the first thing I checked. The CR2016 inside was original -- probably the factory cell from when the truck was built. Flat. Swapped it out, reseated the contacts, and the remote functions came back immediately. But the truck still wasn't reading the transponder clean. That's the part that trips people up: the fob working again doesn't always mean the immobilizer communication is back to normal, especially after a long voltage dropout. I connected through the OBD port, cleared the fault, and reconfirmed the key was paired properly.
Total hands-on time was under 25 minutes. He made it to the field on time.
He asked me what the dealer would have done. Honestly, they probably would have sold him a new key without checking the battery first, then charged him for programming on top. He paid a fraction of that, in the same parking lot where his day almost fell apart.
