2023 Toyota Tundra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

Your 2023 Tundra uses a proximity smart key - the fob communicates with the vehicle's security system to authorize starting the engine. It's not just a shape cut into metal. The fob has to be electronically paired to your specific truck using diagnostic equipment before it will do anything beyond sit in your pocket. A hardware store key machine reads the physical cut of a blade.

Q: What equipment do you use to program Toyota smart keys?

Professional-grade diagnostic tools - the kind that communicate directly with the vehicle's security system through the OBD port and handle the Toyota-specific enrollment sequences. For a 2023 Tundra, the programming process is not a simple plug-and-go; it involves authenticating with the vehicle's immobilizer and registering the new fob to the system. Not every locksmith has equipment current enough to handle the latest Tundra generation.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2023 Tundra. Is all-keys-lost harder than just adding a spare?

Yes, and it takes longer. When there are no working keys present, the programming sequence has a built-in wait period - the system runs a timed security countdown before it will accept new fobs. Add-a-key with one working fob skips that entirely and goes straight to enrollment. All-keys-lost also means the emergency blade needs to be decoded or the VIN used to generate the correct cut, since there's no working key to reference.

Q: My Tundra fob works sometimes and not others. Is it the battery or something worse?

Usually the battery. The CR2450 in this fob has enough capacity that it can show intermittent behavior before it fully quits - enough juice to ping the truck sometimes, not enough to do it reliably from more than a few feet away. Swap the cell first. Make sure it's the correct size and that it's seated flat with clean contact on both sides.

2023 Toyota Tundra Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already on Maricopa Highway heading toward Meiners Oaks when the text came in with the VIN attached. That's the move right there. She'd read something online about having it ready and it made a real difference - I had the correct key blank staged in the van before I even turned off the engine in her driveway.

She had one working fob and needed a spare. The cat cafe nearby was where she'd originally planned to wait while the dealer handled it, but the dealer was quoting her a wait of several days just to get the appointment. She didn't want to leave the truck without a backup key that long.

With the VIN confirmed and a working fob in hand, I ran the add-a-key procedure using my diagnostic equipment. The system enrolled the new fob alongside the original, no erasure of existing keys required. Then I extracted the emergency blade from the new fob, verified it operated the hidden door cylinder, and seated it back in. Walked every button. Verified the start. Done on the driveway.

She mentioned the dealer price almost as a footnote. I didn't have to say much. The job was finished before she finished her coffee.

Toyota Tundra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things to watch for specifically when you're calling about a late-model Toyota. First, any real locksmith should be able to tell you upfront what programming equipment and process they use for a 2023 Tundra - this vehicle requires professional diagnostic tools, not a generic cloner. If they're vague about that, they may not be able to finish the job.
