So I went mechanical. Popped the fob open, found the PCF7953 chip sitting crooked on its contacts. These new split-board designs let the chip float if the plastic clips wear. Reseated it, cleaned the contact points with DeoxIT, snapped it back together.
The truck fired right up. I still told him about the TSB and suggested he get the BCM updated when convenient. But for tonight, he made it back to camp with hot food and a working truck. Sometimes the quick fix beats the perfect fix.
