Out in the College area of Ventura, a guy pulled up from a week-long trip, set his bags down, and his 2011 Tundra turned over but would not fire. It cranked, then nothing. He tried again. Same thing. The chip inside his key head had cracked, probably from being dropped or from years of keychain weight pulling on it. The key blade was perfectly fine, cut correctly, turned the cylinder no problem. But the immobilizer was reading nothing from the chip on every attempt, so the truck refused to start even though everything else was functioning.
Cut and programmed a new key on site. The Tundra started on the first turn.
He stood there for a second like he was waiting for something to go wrong. Then he just laughed. Two days of assuming it was an engine problem, and it was the key the whole time. He was back on the road well before the dealer would have even pulled his repair order.
