A tire shop near the Ojai Valley Trail called me about a 2020 Tundra that was stuck in their lot. Another locksmith had already been out, tried to program a key through the OBD port, got errors, and left. Now the truck wouldn't accept any fob at all. The system was in a fault state, and the customer was watching his afternoon disappear.
When I got there, the owner was sitting on a bench outside the shop, just scrolling his phone. Not angry, just tired of the whole thing. He told me the other guy was there for an hour and a half before he gave up.
The problem was the failed programming attempt had locked out OBD communication on the Smart Key ECU, which Toyota calls the ID box. On the 2020 Tundra that is the 89990-0C051 module behind the dash. I pulled it, connected my ACDP bench tool, read the security data directly off the board chip, cleared the fault codes, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. No OBD needed when you go straight to the source.
His HYQ14FBA fob registered on the first clean attempt after the reset. Tested lock, unlock, panic, push-button start, and walked every door handle for proximity detection. All good.
The whole thing took about 90 minutes, which included pulling and reinstalling the module. A dealer tow-and-wait scenario would have meant days. He drove out of that tire shop lot the same afternoon.
