A tire shop off the main road in Ojai called me, not the truck's owner directly. That's usually a sign the situation has already gone sideways.
A guy had brought his 2020 Tundra in for tires. Somewhere in the process they discovered he needed a key made. They called a locksmith. That locksmith showed up, attempted programming through the OBD port, got errors partway through, and left. Now the truck wouldn't accept any fob. I pulled the relevant module, read the security data directly off the chip, cleared the fault condition, and rebuilt the key registration from a clean state. Then programmed the replacement fob properly, verified all three buttons, confirmed the push-button start, and walked the door handles.
The whole job ran about 90 minutes on site. The owner asked what the dealer would have done. Honest answer: flatbed tow, minimum two days in the queue, and a bill that would have hurt. He saved a good chunk, and the truck left the tire shop on its own wheels the same afternoon.
I carry the bench tools specifically because other attempts sometimes make the situation worse. It's not a criticism of every other locksmith, but when a job lands on my plate already broken, I need to be able to work past the damage.
