A farm worker called at 5:30 in the morning. He was parked at the supply store off Creek Road in the Oak View neighborhood in Ojai, and his shift started at six. The crew was already loading. His 2021 Tundra had been sitting overnight and when he walked out that morning the fob was dead, the push-button start would not respond, and he had no way to get rolling.
I was at that lot in about 25 minutes.
He had already tried holding the fob against the start button, which is the right instinct on these trucks when the battery is critically low. It did not work, which told me we were past a simple swap. I used the emergency insert blade from his fob to get the door open, connected to the OBD port, and ran the diagnostic. The fob itself needed a fresh CR2032 and a re-pair to the vehicle security system. The contact tab inside had lost its tension, so even though the battery had voltage left, it was not making clean contact under load.
Whole thing took about 20 minutes hands-on. I handed him a spare CR2032 for the glovebox before I left.
He made it to the field on time. The dealer would have meant a tow, a waiting room, and most of a workday gone. That is not a trade he could afford at five-thirty in the morning, and it did not have to be.
