Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does my 2008 Tundra need one?

There's a small chip embedded in the plastic head of the key. When you insert it and turn the ignition, the ring antenna around the cylinder reads the chip. If the signal matches what the immobilizer is expecting, the engine starts. If it doesn't match, or if the chip is dead or missing, the engine either won't start at all or starts briefly and shuts down. The 2008 Tundra uses this system across the lineup.

That symptom, engine cranks, starts for a second, then stalls, is a known sign of a transponder issue on this generation. The immobilizer reads the chip on the way in, and if the signal is weak or the chip is failing, the engine gets just enough to fire and then the system shuts it down. I got a call from a guy parked in a gated lot near Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara. His 2008 Tundra wouldn't start. The key turned, nothing happened.
