Over in Hobson Park, a 2002 MDX owner called me because his SUV would crank but immediately stall, and the green key light on the dash kept blinking after every attempt. He had been at it for twenty minutes by the time I arrived.

He had one key left. He told me he had bought a second one online a few months back, a pre-cut blank from a locksmith supply site, and had it cut at a hardware store. It looked right, fit the lock, but the car never accepted it. He used the original until that one started acting up too.

He asked what the dealer would have done. Probably the same end result, I told him, but he would have dropped the MDX off, waited for a slot, and picked it up later. We were done in his parking spot before lunch.
