Hollywood by the Sea in Oxnard, late on a weeknight. A 2014 Acura MDX sitting nose-in at the curb, hazards going.
The owner had already changed the CR2032. Twice, actually. The dash was showing a key system warning, and the fob was not waking the car at the door handles or at the start button. He had already called a tow company. I asked him to hold off.
I started with the basics. Walked the door handles, checked proximity response at the front doors, then tried the fob inside the cabin near the cup holder where the backup detection area sits. Nothing. Pulled out the scan tool and connected to the OBD port. No hard lockout fault in the immobilizer, no communication error with the body control module. What I was looking at was a registration dropout, where the vehicle's security system had essentially lost the pairing with that fob.
On these third-generation MDX models, adding or restoring a key is a timed procedure through the diagnostic port. There is a sequence the system runs through, and you cannot rush it. The previous key data gets cleared, the new fob goes through registration, and the system confirms it before the start button will do anything past accessory mode.
I cut the emergency insert key to the vehicle, completed the registration on site, and then linked the fob to the Driver 1 memory position so his seat and mirror settings would follow the key like they should.
After that, we walked everything. Lock, unlock, handle touch unlock on both front doors, the start button, and every other button on the fob. All of it working, right there on the street.
No tow. No appointment. No waiting room. He pulled out of Hollywood by the Sea while I was still putting my tools away. The dealer conversation never really came up, but I know what that route would have cost him in time alone.
