I got the call out in Moorpark, right around the Moorpark College Area. A tire shop owner had a 2011 Acura MDX sitting dead in his lot, and he was not happy about it.
Another locksmith had attempted a key replacement earlier that day. Somewhere in the middle of the programming sequence, their tool dropped communication. After that, the MDX would crank, catch for a second, then immediately die. The key warning indicator on the dash kept flashing. The engine would not stay running.
This is a known failure mode when a registration sequence gets interrupted mid-process. The immobilizer control logic can log the incomplete attempt, stack an error count, and refuse to authenticate any key until the fault is cleared properly. Low battery voltage during programming makes it worse, because the module drops communication at a critical step and leaves things in a half-registered state.
First thing I did was hook up a battery support unit and bring voltage up to a stable level before touching anything else. Trying to clear codes or re-register with a weak battery just repeats the same problem. Once voltage was solid, I cleared the stored faults through the diagnostic port and ran a clean key registration from scratch.
No guessing. No rushing the handshake.
The MDX started on the first try and stayed running. I cycled it three more times to be sure it was not intermittent. The shop owner watched it idle and just nodded. He had already been quoted a tow and a multi-day dealer wait. This was done in his lot, same afternoon, for a fraction of what that would have cost him.
