Got a call from a yoga instructor stuck near Fremont Square Shopping Center in Oxnard. Her 2006 MDX had sat overnight with an interior light on, battery went flat, and after a jump the green key icon started blinking on the dash. Engine cranked hard but wouldn't catch. She only had one key and figured the chip died along with the battery.
That's not exactly what happens, but close enough. When the 12-volt drops low, the immobilizer control unit on these first-gen MDXs can lose its sync with the transponder. The module lives behind the dash, talks to the ring antenna around the ignition cylinder, and needs a clean handshake with the Megamos ID13 chip in the key head every time you turn it.
I pulled her VIN, confirmed the blank, cut a new BHD106-PT to her lock cylinder, and connected my Smart Pro to the DLC port under the dash. Registered the new transponder to the immobilizer, then paired her existing E4EG8D-444H-A remote so she had full button control back. Green key icon stayed dark. Engine fired on the first turn.
She watched the whole thing from the sidewalk, coffee in hand, and kept saying she thought this was going to be a tow-and-wait-at-the-dealer situation. It wasn't. Done on site, saved her a good chunk, and she still made her afternoon class.
