A guy up in Eucalyptus Hill texted me a pin and said his 2023 MDX had been sitting in the driveway since the night before. Proximity unlock had stopped working entirely. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning. He had already put in a fresh CR2032 himself, which was the right instinct, but nothing changed.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob. I checked that the factory FCC ID matched what the MDX should have, then verified the dealer part number prefix was correct for the MDX and not a lookalike fob from a different Acura model. It was the right fob. Battery was seated fine.
I wiped down the driver-side handle sensor area before touching anything else. There was a visible film of dried salt and dust packed into the recess around the exterior touch pad. That alone can kill proximity response on the driver door while the passenger side still works, which is exactly what he was seeing.
After cleaning, proximity on the driver door came back about 70 percent. Close, but not clean. So I went ahead and did the full registration through the diagnostic port to make sure the fob and the vehicle's security system were properly synced. That cleared it the rest of the way.
Walked every door, tested handle lock and unlock, ran through the remaining buttons, confirmed push-button start. Solid.
He had been about to call the dealer and leave the car there for a day. Turned out most of the problem was coastal grime and a registration that needed a refresh, both handled in his own driveway in under an hour.
