I pulled into a parking lot near La Colonia in Oxnard on a call for a 2005 MDX. First-generation truck, good shape, one original key that had been through a lot of years and a lot of keyrings.
The owner wanted a spare cut. Smart move on a vehicle this age, because these ignition cylinders are not getting any younger and the original key blanks are not exactly sitting on every shelf in town.
I decoded the lock and cut a fresh blank to match. That part goes quick. The part that matters on this generation is what happens after the cut. A perfectly shaped key with an unregistered chip will crank the engine and nothing else. The immobilizer shuts it down before it catches. So the second half of the job was at the OBD port with my diagnostic tool, walking through the add-key procedure and registering the new transponder to the immobilizer control unit.
The green key light on the dash is the tell. It should hold for about two seconds after you turn the ignition on, then go out. If it blinks, the system rejected the chip. If it stays dark, the key is not being read at all. When I turned the new key for the first time, it held steady for two seconds and went out clean. Then it started.
The owner had been quoted a trip to the dealer as the only option. Waiting for parts, leaving the vehicle, picking it up later. We were done in that parking lot in one visit. That gap between what the dealer involves and what this actually takes is what I get called for.
