I got the call from Mar Vista in Oxnard on a weekday morning. Delivery driver, 2018 Acura MDX, couldn't get the door to unlock via the handle touch sensor. He tried the mechanical insert as a backup, the way anyone would, and the blade snapped off inside the door cylinder.
That insert doesn't get used much on these. It lives folded inside the fob, out of sight, and when it finally comes out after years of sitting, it can bind in an old or slightly dirty cylinder. That's what happened here.
First thing I did was extract the broken piece without touching the wafers. No drilling, no damage to the cylinder. Once it was out, I decoded the lock and cut a fresh replacement insert to match.
The fob itself was the five-button unit with the factory remote start setup. The case was cracked from a prior drop, but the internal board was intact. I moved the original board into a new shell, seated a fresh CR2032, and closed it back up.
Then the test cycle. Handle touch unlock on both front doors, lock, the other fob buttons, push-button start. No warning messages on the dash. Everything working the way it should.
He was back on route inside of an hour. His original hardware, no dealer appointment, no waiting on a parts order.
