Connected to the BCM through the OBD port. No hard codes, just U0230 history for lost communication with the keyless module. That usually means the fob isn't transmitting at all, not just weak.
Opened the remote on his tailgate. The battery contact tab had a hairline crack where it solders to the board. Common failure point on these Continental builds. Quick reflow with the portable iron, new CR2032 seated properly.
Touch unlock came back immediately. All five buttons tested good: lock, unlock, panic, remote start, power liftgate.
The dealer had quoted him overnight for a new key. Fixed it right there in his driveway in about twenty minutes.
