2020 Acura MDX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is the smart key on a 2020 MDX and how does it work?

It is a proximity fob, meaning the vehicle is constantly looking for it. Antennas built into the door handles, the cabin, and the start button area are broadcasting low-frequency signals. When you grab a handle, the fob wakes up and replies. If the encrypted handshake checks out, the door unlocks. Same process at the start button. The factory FCC ID on your fob and the dealer part number tie it to this specific platform.

Q: Dealer vs. mobile locksmith for a 2020 MDX smart key in Butterfly Beach. What is the actual difference?

The dealer process usually goes like this: prove ownership, schedule an appointment, possibly tow the car in if it is an all-keys-lost situation, wait for the key to be ordered by VIN if they do not have it in stock, then come back for programming. You could be looking at several days without the vehicle. My process is one visit.

Q: My 2020 MDX shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob is right there. What is going on?

This one comes up a lot and it is almost never the fob itself. First thing to check: is anything else on the key ring with it? Other fobs, thick metal pieces, or wireless devices clustered close to the fob can interfere with the low-frequency handshake. Test it solo. Second: CR2032, but seated correctly. A new battery installed crooked or against a slightly bent contact will behave exactly like a dead one.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have it programmed?

Yes, with a caveat. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your vehicle. Aftermarket versions vary in quality and some do not pair cleanly even with the right tools. If you go that route, bring the fob to me before assuming it will work. The programming still requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port regardless of where the fob came from. There is no self-programming sequence on this system.

2020 Acura MDX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Butterfly Beach call. 2020 Acura MDX. All keys lost.

He had parked near the beach and gone for a long walk. Somewhere along the way, his only smart key was gone. No spare at home, nothing tucked in a drawer. Just a locked MDX sitting there and no way to wake it up.

I got there, started at the door. Once I was inside, I connected at the OBD port and pulled up the vehicle security system menu. All-keys-lost on this generation means every stored key identity gets wiped and the system forces a timed relearn sequence. There is no button trick, no ignition cycle shortcut. It is a tool job, full stop.

The relearn has a countdown built in, so you sit with it. That is fine. It is doing what it needs to do.

About 45 minutes after I arrived, the new fob woke up the dash and the engine started without hesitation. I registered a second key on the same session so he would not end up back in this situation.

He had assumed it meant a tow and a service appointment, probably a few days without the car. It was done before the afternoon got late, on the spot, for a fraction of what the dealer would have quoted him.

Acura MDX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is replacing a 2020 Acura MDX smart key such a big deal compared to a regular key?▼

Because the fob is not just a remote that happens to come with the car. The 2020 MDX uses a proximity-based system where the vehicle's antennas actively communicate with the fob every time you approach a door handle or press the start button. The fob has to answer with the right encrypted response or the vehicle security system will not authorize the engine to run.
