Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2007 Acura MDX Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out at Mandalay Beach in Oxnard, I pulled up to a row of beach-adjacent townhomes around midmorning. The owner had texted me the VIN the night before, which I appreciated. By the time I got there I already knew exactly what I was dealing with.

She still had her original key, and she needed a second one added. The MDX has a driver memory system that ties into which key you're using, so getting that second key set up correctly as its own driver profile was part of the job, not an afterthought.

She asked me about the dealer early on, almost apologetically, like she didn't want to bring it up. I told her what I tell everyone: the dealer is a fine option, but they're going to order the key, call you back in a day or two, and hand you a number on a service sheet that reflects their overhead, not the actual work. She'd already gotten that experience once before, which is why she was standing in her own driveway talking to me.

I cut the replacement blade in the van, confirmed the fob matched the factory ID on her original, then programmed both sides through the OBD port. The immobilizer accepted the new key without erasing her existing one. Then I walked every button on the new fob, checked the flip blade seated right, and confirmed the driver memory profile was responding.

She picked up the new key, tried the flip, and nodded. That was the whole moment. Nothing dramatic. Job done in the parking lot, no tow, no wait, and she saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted her the first time around.
