Before assuming the key needs to be replaced, check whether the plastic head is intact and whether the key goes into the cylinder cleanly. Intermittent no-starts that clear up when you jiggle the key usually point to a mechanical fit issue, not a dead chip.

Can I buy a transponder key blank online and have just anyone cut and program it?

Cutting is one skill, programming is a different one entirely.

A lot of shops can cut a key to fit the ignition. Fewer have the equipment to register the transponder to a 2004 MDX, especially on an all-keys-lost situation where the old codes have to be cleared first. If you buy a blank online and take it to a shop that can only cut, you end up with a key that fits the lock and does nothing else.

The blank also has to be the correct type for this vehicle's immobilizer. Not every blank that fits the keyway carries the right chip. That is where online purchases go sideways most often.
