The factory fob ID on this vehicle is the factory FCC ID, and the transponder chip inside has to match what the immobilizer is registered to. There were also Driver 1 and Driver 2 variants under different dealer part numbers, tied to the seat and mirror memory system. That designation matters for how the key behaves when you unlock, not just whether the engine starts.

I verify the fob ID, the chip type, and the driver designation before anything gets cut or programmed. If it does not line up with your specific vehicle, it does not go in your ignition.

How long should a replacement flip key last?

The programmed data in the transponder chip does not wear out. Electronically, a properly programmed replacement key should last as long as the original.

What actually fails is the hardware. The flip mechanism on these keys takes real abuse, especially if the key lives on a heavy ring or gets dropped regularly. The hinge pin loosens, the shell cracks, buttons wear soft and start missing presses. The circuit board inside usually survives all of that.

When the case goes but the board is still good, I can often rebuild the key by transferring the internals into a new shell. That saves the programming and avoids a full replacement job. I see that situation fairly often on these MDXs.

What if the new key stops starting the car?

A flashing green key warning after a replacement means the immobilizer is not completing the handshake with the transponder. That points to a chip registration issue, a voltage problem during programming, or in rare cases a defective key. I scan the immobilizer and the engine control module, confirm the key is registered correctly, and retest before I leave Mar Vista. If something acts up after I am gone, I come back and sort it out.

I bought a replacement flip key online. Can I program it myself?

Not on this one. The 2008 MDX does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the transponder side of the key. Registering the chip to the immobilizer requires a diagnostic tool with the right Honda/Acura software. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button sequence that handles it.

The remote portion is a separate question. Some owners have had luck using an onboard sequence just for the remote lock/unlock function, but that only pairs the fob buttons. It does not touch the transponder. The car will still not start from a chip that has not been properly registered.

So if you bought a key online, you saved money on the part. You still need someone with the right equipment to finish the job.

My MDX remote works fine but the key-not-detected warning still shows up sometimes. What is going on?

This is one of the more confusing symptoms on these because the remote and the immobilizer feel like one system but they are not. The remote handles door locks. The transponder chip handles starting. They operate independently.

Intermittent key warnings with a working remote usually point to a few things: a weak vehicle battery causing voltage drops during startup, a worn transponder chip that is reading inconsistently, or corrosion on the ignition cylinder contacts that the chip communicates through. I have also seen it come from a key that was copied from a copy, where the chip signal has degraded.

The green key light flashing on startup and then clearing is the system telling you it had to work harder than it should have to read the chip. Worth diagnosing before it becomes a no-start.
