Got a call from a guy over in Montalvo neighborhood in Ventura. His 2003 Avalanche was sitting in the driveway with one key left, and the remote had been dead for months. He said he'd been locking the doors by reaching through and hitting the switch. Just living with it.
The remote was an LHJ011, three-button, lock, unlock, panic. I cracked it open on his tailgate and the CR2032 wasn't just dead, it had leaked a little onto one of the board contacts. Cleaned the terminals, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and tested the buttons. All three responded.
Then the ignition key. His spare had been cut at a hardware store years ago and never worked right. The PK3 system on these reads a resistor value in the key blade. If the resistance is off, the Body Control Module (BCM) kills the fuel injectors for ten minutes. That is the anti-theft lockout people panic about. His hardware store copy was just a mechanical duplicate with no resistor, so it would crank and never fire. He thought the starter was going bad.
I cut a proper B102 key with the correct resistance pellet and did the PK3 relearn through the BCM. Key turned, truck fired right up, no ten-minute lockout.
He got a working ignition key and a working remote in one stop. The whole thing took about 25 minutes in his driveway. Way less than the dealer would have charged, and he never left the house.
