Out in Matilija, just off the canyon road, a woman had been running her 2010 Avalanche on a single key for two years. She knew she should have gotten a spare cut. She just never did, which is the most common version of this story I hear.

The blade snapped. Not at the ignition, which would have been worse, but in the door lock cylinder. Half the blade was stuck inside the lock, and she was standing in her driveway with the broken head in her hand and nowhere to be.

I pulled the blade fragment from the cylinder with extraction tools, then decoded the lock so I could get the key cut profile without needing to track down the original cut record. The chip in the broken key head was still intact, still readable. That mattered. Because I could pull the transponder data from it, I didn't have to run a full all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and costs more.

I cut two new keys, transferred the chip data, and confirmed the immobilizer was seeing both keys clean before I packed up. Start to finish, about 40 minutes on site in her driveway.

She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her to call and find out. She laughed and said she already knew it would have been a lot more. That part wasn't the point. The point was she had two working keys and a truck she could drive again, and she didn't have to tow it anywhere or wait three days for a VIN-ordered key to come in.
