A guy parked on a side street in Downtown Oxnard called me after his 2009 Avalanche key snapped in the ignition. Half the blade was stuck in the cylinder, half was in his hand.

He'd already called another locksmith. That guy told him the cylinder needed to be drilled out and replaced. New cylinder, new keys, the whole thing. He didn't like the sound of that, so he called me for a second opinion.

I showed up with extraction tools and a Lishi pick for that keyway. I worked the broken fragment out clean, no damage to the wafers inside, no scratches on the cylinder housing. Once the piece was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut depths to reproduce the key.

Then I cut a new blade from the decode, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, and tested it. Cranked right up. His original cylinder was untouched and working exactly like it always had.

The other locksmith's plan would have run him significantly more, and he'd have ended up with a brand new cylinder he didn't need. The job took maybe forty minutes on the curb.
