2013 Chevrolet Avalanche
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2013 Avalanche need one?

The key blade cuts are only half of it. Inside the plastic head of your Avalanche key there's a small chip. When you insert the key and turn it, the antenna ring around the ignition column reads that chip and checks it against what the immobilizer has on file. If the chip isn't there, isn't programmed, or doesn't match, the engine won't start even if the blade is cut perfectly. That's the whole point of the system.

Q: Why does dealer key work on a Chevy take so long compared to what the job actually involves?

A few things stack up. Dealers work off a flat-rate labor system, so you're billed for a fixed block of time regardless of how fast the tech moves. There are also wait periods built into GM's security relearn process on these vehicles. The system requires a set idle period after programming before it confirms the new key, and that time is not optional.

Q: My 2013 Avalanche starts fine but the remote stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Probably not. The transponder in the ignition key and the remote fob are separate devices. If the truck starts, the transponder side is good. A non-responsive remote almost always comes down to the fob battery. Swap it first. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob may need to be re-paired, or the fob itself could have a failed button contact. That's a much smaller job than a full key replacement.

Q: I bought a replacement key and fob online for my 2013 Avalanche. Can I program them myself?

The remote fob on these has an onboard relearn sequence that some owners have had success with, but it only works if you already have a working programmed key to complete the cycle. If you're adding a fob and your existing key is good, it may be worth trying the ignition-based procedure first. The transponder in the key blade is a different story.

2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Up in Upper Ojai, I got a call from an older couple at their house on a weekday morning. Their 2013 Avalanche was down to one key, and that one key had been getting sketchy on the remote side. The truck started fine every time, but the lock and unlock were hit or miss, and they hadn't had a spare since they bought it used a couple of years back.

Getting to the dealer wasn't a small thing for them. The nearest Chevy store is a stretch of freeway they didn't want to drive, and then you're sitting in a service waiting room for the better part of a day. Neither of those options was good.

I pulled up to their driveway with my mobile setup. Decoded the blade off the door lock cylinder, cut a fresh key, programmed both transponders through the OBD port. The separate remote fobs got paired at the same time. While I was there, I walked them through how to tell when the fob battery is getting low so they wouldn't end up guessing next time.

Before I left, they had two working keys and two working remotes. They never left the property. The dealer had quoted a number that made the wife laugh when I told her what I charge. Two keys, done in the driveway, before lunch.

Chevrolet Avalanche Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Chevrolet dealer actually take for a key replacement on an Avalanche?▼

Longer than the work justifies. The hands-on programming time for a transponder key like the one on a 2013 Avalanche is short, under 30 minutes once the vehicle is in the bay. But dealers bill by flat-rate labor, which doesn't always match the clock. The bigger problem is parts availability.
