A mom doing elementary school pickup near Ojai Valley Trail flagged me down, basically. She called while I was already in Ojai on another job. Her 2012 Avalanche's proximity fob had gone through the washing machine that morning. Dead. Kids in the back seat, about an hour before her next stop, and the dealer told her Thursday at the earliest. It was Monday.
I pulled up to the school lot about twenty minutes later. Popped my Smart Pro onto the OBD-II port under the dash and started the security access procedure. The 2012 Avalanche uses GM's PEPS system with the OUC6000066 fob, a five-button proximity key with remote start. The BCM (Body Control Module) on these runs a timed security authorization before it will accept a new fob ID, so there is a built-in wait of about 12 minutes where you just stand there.
While the timer counted down, she told me she almost tried drying the fob with a hair dryer. Glad she did not. Heat warps the internal antenna and kills the board faster than water does.
New fob programmed, all buttons tested, doors walked, remote start confirmed. I told her to keep the washed one as a shell donor in case she ever cracks the case on the new fob down the road.
She pulled out of that lot with a working key, kids buckled in, and made her next stop on time.
