Over in Freedom Park in Camarillo, a woman called me about her 2013 Sonic LTZ. The flip key shell had split right at the hinge pivot, and the B106 blade was wobbling so bad she was afraid it would snap off inside the ignition cylinder.
She had already been to the dealer. They quoted a full replacement key, cut and programmed, with a wait time of about a week because the fob had to be ordered. What they did not mention is that her ID46 transponder chip and the circuit board inside were working fine. The problem was the plastic housing, nothing else.
I brought a fresh aftermarket shell and my B106 Lishi to her garage. Pulled her original OHT01060512 apart on the trunk lid so she could see the guts. Same cracking pattern I find on dozens of these GM flip keys. The shell fatigues right at the hinge pin after a few years of being tossed in a purse or sat on in a back pocket.
Moved her working board and chip into the new shell, cut a fresh blade to match, tested all five buttons, ran the remote lock and unlock from across the driveway, and confirmed the immobilizer handshake on start.
Her old key electronics never needed replacing. She just needed the housing swapped and a clean blade cut. Took about twenty minutes and saved her a good chunk over what the dealer wanted for a part she did not need.
