Got a call from a guy near the Pleasant Valley Historical Museum in Camarillo. He was sitting in his 2018 Sonic in a parking lot, dash reading "No Remote Detected," engine not turning over. He said the push button just blinked at him and did nothing.

I drove out and pulled codes through the OBD port. The body control module, part number 42359434 on these second-gen Sonics, had lost its key authorization data. Both fobs were physically fine, batteries good, buttons responsive. The BCM just stopped recognizing them.
I ran a full key relearn through the security access protocol. GM's system requires a timed security handshake before it lets you write new key data, about 12 minutes of waiting while the tool and the BCM talk back and forth. Registered both his original HYQ4AA fobs back to the car one after the other.
He sat on a bench near the museum the whole time. When I told him it was done, he walked over, hit the start button, and the Sonic fired right up. No tow, no dealer visit, no week without his car. Just a guy who got his lunch break back.
