I pulled into the Pep Boys lot off Thousand Oaks Boulevard and found him standing next to his 2020 Sonic looking like a man who'd already had a long week. He had, technically.
He'd called one of those bargain-rate locksmith ads that showed up at the top of Google, paid more than he expected, and still ended up with a fob that worked maybe half the time. Cleaned the contacts, seated the battery correctly, reassembled it properly. Then I connected to the OBD port and ran the full GM key-learning sequence so the vehicle's security system had a clean, confirmed registration for that fob. No shortcuts.
Walked every button with him. Lock, unlock, and the other three. All five working. Start, clean. Passive entry on both door handles, working.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him considerably more than what I charged, and the previous locksmith had charged nearly as much as the dealer and left the job unfinished. He paid exactly what I quoted him on the phone, and he drove off in under an hour.
