If the vehicle doesn't recognize that signal, it won't authorize the engine to run. A key that's cut correctly but not paired to your specific car will turn in the ignition and do nothing useful.

Both sides have to work together. We handle both on site - cut the blade to your vehicle and pair the fob to your security system using diagnostic equipment. You leave with a key that functions exactly like the one you started with.

My Sonic is showing a security warning on the dash and won't start. What does that mean?

That warning is the vehicle security system telling you it didn't get a valid signal from the key during the start attempt. First thing to try: use your spare if you have one. If neither key works, don't keep cranking. Try letting the car sit for a few minutes with the key in the ignition in the on position, then attempt a restart. Some owners have reported intermittent no-start situations on the Sonic that cleared after a short wait, though that's not a permanent fix.

If it keeps coming back, the fault could be a worn fob, a failing ignition cylinder that's not reading the key cleanly, or something in the security system itself that needs diagnostic equipment to sort out. That's where I come in.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2019 Sonic smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment to pair a new fob to the vehicle. There is no button sequence, no ignition cycling trick that does it on this system. If you have a working fob already and just want to add a second, it still needs the same process - a tool that communicates with the vehicle through the diagnostic port.

The fob you bought online may be the correct unit, and that's fine. Bring it along when you call. We can pair it on site and cut the emergency blade if needed. You'll save on the hardware cost by sourcing it yourself, but the programming step isn't something you can skip or do without the right equipment.

All my keys are gone. Is that a bigger job than just adding a spare?

It is, but it's not a dealership-or-nothing situation. All-keys-lost on the 2019 Sonic means the existing key memory in the vehicle security system gets cleared and new keys are enrolled fresh. We do that on site with diagnostic equipment - no tow required.
