2017 Chevrolet Sonic
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2017 Chevrolet Sonic?

Call or text with your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right fob and key setup for your Sonic and give you a price before I show up. When I arrive, I verify the VIN from your dash plate or door jamb, cut the key blade to your vehicle, and use diagnostic equipment to register the fob to your car's security system.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Three things: your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership. Registration or title works. I pull the VIN off the dash or door jamb to verify the key specs on site. Same documents a dealer would ask for, just without the drive or the wait. I do the verification, cutting, and programming right next to the car.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2017 Sonic. Can a new key still be made without any working key?

Yes, and it's a job I do regularly. All-keys-lost on the 2017 Sonic is more involved than adding a spare, because there's no existing registered fob to keep the process simple. The vehicle's security system needs to be accessed through the OBD port to clear the old key data and enroll the new fob fresh.

Q: I bought a fob online for my 2017 Sonic. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech with the right equipment. The 2017 Sonic does not have a self-programming sequence for the fob. No button combo, no ignition-turn trick. Registering a new fob to this vehicle requires a diagnostic tool that communicates with the security system through the OBD port. The fob you bought online is likely fine as a unit. The programming is the step that requires equipment.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy from Camarillo Springs called me on a Tuesday morning. He'd already bought a replacement fob online, watched a YouTube video, and tried every button sequence he could find. The fob sat dead on his passenger seat.

His 2017 Sonic was parked in his driveway. Car started fine with the existing fob, but he wanted a second one working because his wife drives the car too. He figured a spare fob from an online seller would be cheap and easy. What he didn't know is that the Sonic's keyless system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combo. The fob he bought was the right style, but unpaired fobs don't just work out of the box on these cars.

I pulled up to his driveway, plugged into the OBD port, and had his new fob registered to the vehicle in under twenty minutes. Tested lock, unlock, and the other buttons on both fobs. Both worked at full range walking across the driveway.

He was a little quiet about the online fob gamble, but he wasn't wrong to try. He just needed to know the second step. I've seen it a dozen times. The fob itself from a third-party seller is usually fine. It's the pairing that requires the right equipment, and that part doesn't come with the YouTube video.

The dealer had quoted him a wait time of several days for a service appointment just to program a spare. He got it done same-day, in his driveway, for a fraction of what they wanted.

Chevrolet Sonic Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2017 Chevrolet Sonic somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to you. Whether you're at home in Camarillo Springs, at work, or stuck in a parking lot somewhere in Camarillo, I bring the cutting tools and GM-capable programming equipment to your location. Dealers require you to either drive in with a working key or arrange a tow if you have no key at all. I've heard from Sonic owners who were told the car had to come in before anything could be done.
