Got a call from a guy over in Adolfo Camarillo Ranch in Camarillo. His 2017 Chevrolet Sonic wouldn't start. Dashboard lit up with "Service Theft Deterrent System" and the push button did nothing. He'd already called the Chevy dealer and they told him the car had to be towed in, minimum two-day turnaround.
He was standing in his driveway holding his HYQ4AA fob, pressing the start button over and over. That reflex where you just keep trying like it'll change its mind.
I pulled up and checked the fob first. CR2032 was original, three years old, voltage was down around 2.6. That's low enough for the BCM to stop recognizing the passive signal but high enough that the buttons still feel like they work. Swapped in a fresh CR2032 and the car saw the fob instantly. Push button fired right up.
But I didn't pack up yet. I ran the fob through all five buttons, tested the passive entry on both front doors and the trunk, and checked the backup start procedure just to show him how it works. You hold the dead fob against the start button and the car reads the transponder by contact. Good to know for next time.
He went from "my car is broken" to "it was a battery" in about ten minutes, right in his driveway. A fraction of what the dealer wanted for a tow and diagnosis he didn't need.
