A woman from Camarillo Heights called on a Tuesday around noon. She'd been running errands and when she came out of a shop, the remote wouldn't unlock the doors. She used the flip blade manually, got in, and the car started fine. So she figured the fob battery was just low and she'd deal with it later.
Later came faster than she expected. By the time she got home, the car wouldn't start at all. She tried again and again. Nothing. She called a Chevy dealer in the area, and they told her to bring it in or have it towed, and that she'd be looking at a wait of at least a day once it arrived.
She found me online and called.
I drove out to her street in Camarillo Heights with the right fob blank and my cutting and programming equipment. When I got there I did the obvious thing first: opened the fob and checked the CR2032. It was reading low but not dead. The contact tabs were the real problem - both had compressed over time and were barely touching the cell. I corrected the tabs and seated a fresh battery, and the remote came right back.
The start issue was separate. The blade pivot had enough play that the key wasn't sitting fully into the cylinder, which meant the transponder wasn't reading consistently. She'd been getting lucky on starts for a while and her luck ran out that morning.
I cut a fresh blade on the new fob shell, programmed it to the vehicle at the OBD port, tested the remote functions, tested the start, and handed it to her. The whole thing took about 35 minutes at her curb.
She mentioned the dealer quote almost as an aside. She was mostly just glad she didn't have to arrange a tow.
