A woman near the Camarillo Library was sitting in the parking lot with her 2016 Chevrolet Sonic, holding two halves of a remote flip key. The blade had deployed fine, but when she pulled it out of the ignition, the plastic housing cracked and the whole thing came apart in her hand. The battery fell under the seat. Her actual problem took me about 25 minutes. The internals were fine. The transponder chip on the board was intact, the CR2032 contacts looked clean, and the key blade itself was not bent. The shell had just given out at the pivot pin, which is a known weak spot on these GM flip key housings. I transferred her original board and chip into a new OHT01060512 case, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and ran a quick function check on all five buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, and panic.
Then the real test. Key in the ignition, engine turns over, no "Service Theft Deterrent" on the dash. She locked and unlocked from across the lot.
She thought she needed a whole new programmed key. She needed a new shell and someone who would show up where she was.
