2016 Chevrolet Sonic
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote flip key and why does it cost more than a regular key?

A remote flip key is two things built into one unit. The blade folds into the fob housing when not in use and flips out when you press the button on the side, which is why it's called a flip key. Inside the housing there's a transponder chip that has to be registered to your specific Sonic before the engine will start, and there's also the remote entry electronics behind the five buttons that control the locks and other functions.

Q: How long does a Chevrolet dealer actually take for a key replacement on a 2016 Sonic?

Longer than the job itself takes. The actual cut-and-program time on a 2016 Sonic remote flip key is typically 20 to 30 minutes. Dealers tend to quote one to two hours because that's how service scheduling works, not because the job needs that long. If they have to order the fob, you're also waiting on parts, which can stretch into days.

Q: My 2016 Sonic starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons stopped working. Is the fob dead?

Not necessarily. On the 2016 Sonic flip key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote entry side that runs the buttons are separate functions inside the same housing. It's common for one to keep working while the other doesn't. First move: swap the CR2032. A battery that's low enough to drop the remote signal can still put out enough power to trigger the transponder at close range through the ignition.

Q: I bought a replacement flip key fob online. Can I program it myself?

For the remote entry side only, some 2016 Sonic owners have had success with an onboard programming sequence using an existing working key, depending on trim and configuration. It is worth researching for your specific setup. For the transponder side, that is a different story. Getting a new key recognized by the vehicle security system requires professional programming equipment connected to the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn trick for that part of the job.

2016 Chevrolet Sonic Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near the Premium Outlets Area, a woman called about her 2016 Sonic. She had one key left and the flip blade had snapped at the pivot.

The shell was cracked, the blade flopped loose, and she was holding the whole thing together with a rubber band. She had already called the Chevrolet dealer. They told her to bring it in, and the quote came back more than she expected for what felt like a basic replacement.

Her husband found me and figured it was worth a call.

I pulled up to the parking lot, got the Sonic's key code from the door lock so I could cut the blade correctly, and started on the new remote flip key shell while she watched. The flip mechanism on these is satisfying when it clicks right. New blade, programmed to the vehicle through the OBD port so the transponder talks to the security system, and all five buttons tested against the locks.

She pushed the flip button twice just to watch the blade pop out. You can tell when someone has been living with a broken key because the small things hit different once they work again.

The dealer quote was still sitting in her text thread. She saved a good chunk.

Chevrolet Sonic Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Chevrolet dealer to get a replacement key for my 2016 Sonic?▼

No. A properly equipped mobile locksmith can cut and program a remote flip key for your 2016 Sonic on site, wherever the car is parked. The programming goes through the OBD port and registers the new key's transponder to the vehicle security system. The dealer is not the only option. They do have the tools, but so do qualified locksmiths, and you do not have to leave your car on a service drive for two hours to get it done.
