Got a call from a guy over in Wilson Park in Oxnard, standing next to his 2001 Crown Victoria in a church parking lot. Key snapped right at the bow, clean break, blade still stuck in the ignition cylinder.
He had already tried needle-nose pliers. Then tweezers. Then a pen cap, somehow. The broken blade was seated deep enough that nothing was getting purchase on it. He sounded tired when he called, like he had been at it a while.
I pulled up, extracted the blade stub from the cylinder with a broken key extractor, and checked it over. The wafers looked fine, no damage from his plier adventure. The transponder chip in the plastic head was intact too, which was good news for reading the original key data.
Cut a fresh H72-PT blank on the van, coded the 4C chip to match his PATS module through the OBD-II port using my Smart Pro. The theft indicator on the dash cycled and went steady, which is the signal that PATS accepted the new transponder. Clean start on the first turn.
He stood there holding both pieces of the old key like he was going to glue them together later. I told him the chip in that broken head was still valid and to keep it in a drawer at home as a backup for the two-key procedure if he ever needed a spare down the road.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes. A dealer would have meant a tow first, then a wait measured in days, not minutes.
