Got a call from a woman stuck near Topa Topa Brewing Company in Oxnard. She'd flown in on a red-eye, walked out to her 2007 Crown Vic in the parking area, and the key fob was dead. No remote response, doors locked, and the backup blade was zipped inside her bag in the trunk.
She'd already called the dealer. Earliest slot was Thursday. It was Tuesday morning and she was standing next to her car with luggage and no options.
I got there in about 45 minutes. Picked the door open, then plugged my Autel IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash to pull up the PATS status. Both her keys were still registered to the PCM. The 4D-63 80-bit chip was reading clean, no DTCs stored in the instrument cluster module. The whole problem was a dead battery in the remote head portion of the key, Ford part number 5921467, the four-button style with lock, unlock, trunk, and panic.
Swapped the CR2032 cell, tested transponder communication, confirmed the immobilizer handshake on both keys, and ran the remote functions through their cycle. Lock, unlock, trunk pop, panic. Everything came back.
She just stood there watching the trunk release actually work again, like she didn't trust it yet.
She drove home that same morning. The dealer route would have meant towing, days of waiting, and a much bigger bill. She skipped all of that.
