Got a call from a guy over in the Pierpont neighborhood in Ventura. He had a 2008 Crown Victoria, the old Police Interceptor package that was now his daily driver. Only ever had one key. He pulled it out of the ignition and the plastic bow just cracked apart in his hand, right along the seam where the transponder chip sits. The blade was fine. The chip housing was not.
He was standing in his driveway holding two pieces of a key, staring at the chip like it was a contact lens he dropped. He asked if he could just tape it together. I told him the chip needs to sit in a specific position inside the key head to communicate with the PATS antenna ring around the ignition cylinder, and electrical tape was not going to keep that alignment.
I got there in about 25 minutes. Cut a new H75 blade on my Triton machine, matched to the original. Programmed the fresh 4D-63 80-bit transponder through the OBD-II port using the existing key's chip as the first-key credential. Ford's PATS has a built-in 10-minute security timer between key learn cycles, so there is always a wait in the middle. Total time from handshake to handing him two working keys was about 35 minutes.
He kept the cracked original in his glovebox. Old habits.
