Got a call from a guy off Rice Avenue corridor in Oxnard. His 2006 Crown Victoria cranked strong but would not start. Fuel pump primed, battery was solid, starter sounded healthy. But the theft indicator light on the dash was flashing fast, which told me the answer before I even got there.
He had been using a copy of his key that a hardware store cut for him a while back. Looked right, turned the ignition fine, but the blank had no PATS transponder chip inside. It worked for the doors and the steering column, so he never questioned it. His original chipped key had been sitting in a junk drawer with a cracked bow, and he forgot which one was which.
I drove out on my lunch run. Pulled up, plugged into the OBD-II port, and read the PATS module. System was healthy, just not seeing a valid transponder. I cut a new H75 key with a TI 4C chip, programmed it through the diagnostic port, and waited out the ten-minute security timer Ford builds into the process. Second key registered right after.
He turned it over and the theft light went solid, then off. Engine caught on the first try. The whole thing took about 30 minutes, most of that just the PATS countdown running its clock.
He had already called a dealer in Ventura. They quoted him a tow-in, a multi-day wait, and a price that made him keep looking. His car never left the parking spot.
