Over in the Pierpont neighborhood in Ventura, a woman flagged me down on a call. Not literally, but close. Her groceries were in the back seat of her 2001 Ford Escape. It was July. The frozen stuff had maybe 30 minutes before it turned into soup.
Her only key had snapped right at the bow, half the blade stuck in the ignition, the transponder chip side in her hand. She called the Ford dealer. Earliest opening was tomorrow afternoon. She called me and I was about 20 minutes out.
I got there, extracted the broken blade from the ignition cylinder with a hook pick, and checked the transponder half she was holding. The 4C glass chip inside the H74 head was intact. Good news. I cut a fresh H74 blank on my Condor, then programmed the new key through the OBD-II port using the PATS parameter reset on my IM608. The 2001 Escape needs two working keys to add a third through the on-board procedure, but since she only ever had one, the diagnostic route was the only option.
From her phone call to her engine running was about 40 minutes. She just stood there watching the dash, waiting for the theft light to do something wrong. It didn't.
