What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2013 Ford Escape?

The self-programming sequences you'll find on forums apply to the traditional transponder key on base trims -- that's a completely different setup. If you've already got the fob, bring it along and I can program it for you. An aftermarket fob from a reputable supplier will pair fine as long as the frequency matches the factory spec for this market. The emergency insert blade will also need to be cut to your vehicle.

My 2013 Escape shows a key warning even with a fresh battery. What else could cause that?

A few things. First, make sure the new CR2032 is seated flat and the contacts aren't bent or corroded. A slightly tilted battery will read as no battery. Second, check that you're using the correct battery size -- CR2032, not a thinner CR2025, which can fit the slot but won't make solid contact.

If the battery and contacts check out, the next thing I look at is whether the fob got wet. Water intrusion inside the fob case can corrode the circuit board enough to cause intermittent failures even after the battery is replaced. Sometimes the board is fine and a careful cleaning brings it back. Sometimes the fob itself needs to be replaced and reprogrammed.

There's also a known behavior on this generation where holding the fob right against certain surfaces -- thick leather, metal key rings stacked on it -- can interfere with the signal enough to trigger a warning. Keep it separated from other metal and retest before assuming a hardware failure.
