A guy in the Loma Vista neighborhood in Ventura called me about his 2013 Ford Escape. Said the push button wouldn't respond and the doors ignored him completely. He'd already been to an auto parts store and bought a CR2032, swapped it himself, and nothing changed. He was ready to have it towed to the dealer.
I pulled up and he was sitting on his front steps with the fob in pieces on a paper towel. He'd watched one of my YouTube videos on Ford smart keys and tried to do the battery himself, which was the right call. But when I picked up the fob housing, I could see the issue. One of the tiny battery contact springs inside the back cover had gotten pushed sideways when he popped it open. The CR2032 was fresh but it wasn't making solid contact on one side.
I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, snapped the fob together, and tested. Passive entry worked on both front doors. Liftgate button responded. Remote start fired clean from about 40 feet. Three ignition cycles, all good. I checked the second fob too since the same thing can happen to both over time.
He didn't need a new key. He didn't need a tow or a dealer visit. Just someone who could spot a bent contact clip and fix it on site for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him.
