I was parked off Harbor Boulevard near the Pacific View area on a Tuesday afternoon, already wrapping another job, when the call came in. An Escape owner said her fob had been acting up for a couple weeks, then stopped working entirely that morning. She had one key left, and it wasn't doing much.
When I got to her, the fob would not lock the car, would not unlock it remotely, and the door handle touch unlock on the driver side was completely dead. She had been using the insert key inside the fob to physically work the door. The start button was still reading the fob when she held it close, so the car would run, but everything remote was gone.
I pulled the fob apart on my tailgate. The CR2032 looked fine visually, but it was reading low on my meter. Swapped it, reseated the contacts, and about half the function came back. Touch unlock on the driver door was still dead, which told me right away that was a separate issue from the key itself.
I connected my tool to the OBD port, pulled into the immobilizer and fob registration side, confirmed the fob was still properly enrolled, and verified no fault flags against it. The key was fine. The door handle sensor on the driver side was the actual problem, and I told her that plainly so she wasn't throwing money at a new fob for no reason.
Then I ran the full test sequence anyway, because that's the job. Every button, both door handles, range from across the parking lane, and three clean start cycles. Five extra minutes, but those five minutes are what separates a finished job from a handed-off problem.
She had already called the dealer before me. They quoted her a new fob plus labor, wanted the car brought in, and couldn't fit her until later in the week. She paid a fraction of that, and she left knowing exactly what was wrong and what wasn't.
