I was parked on Petit Avenue near the Thille neighborhood when the guy pulled up behind me in his truck. He'd found me through YouTube before he ever needed a locksmith. Watched a Ford key replacement video, saw the whole process, saved the number. When his 2007 Escape started giving him grief a few months later, he already knew roughly what the job looked like.
He was coming off a morning on the water. Said the remote head key had been cutting out on him for a week. Sometimes the buttons worked, sometimes they didn't. He figured it was the battery and kept putting it off.
It was the battery, partially. The CR2032 had enough juice to turn the car over but not enough to power the remote reliably. Weak cell, not a dead system. I swapped the battery, seated it correctly, and the buttons came back strong. But while I had it open I noticed some corrosion on one of the contacts, probably from being bounced around in a cup holder near a water bottle.
Cleaned the contacts, confirmed all three buttons working, did a couple of test lock and unlock cycles from across the lot, and ran three clean starts. That was it.
He mentioned the dealer had already quoted him for a full key replacement before he called me. He didn't need a new key. He needed someone to actually look at the one he had. Came out to a fraction of what they wanted, done at the curb in Thille while the boat was still on the trailer.
