2014 Ford Escape Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a woman over in Pierpont, right near the beach. Her 2014 Escape had been showing a key-not-detected warning intermittently for about a week and a half. She had already been to a locksmith, not me, who made her a replacement key. That key lasted eight days.
It would start the car in the morning without issue. By evening, the push-to-start button would flash the warning and nothing would happen. She assumed it was an electrical problem with the car itself, maybe something with the battery or the antenna ring. Her neighbor told her to check the fuse box. She did. Nothing obvious there.
When I got to her, I asked her to hand me both the original worn fob and the replacement the other locksmith made. The replacement was the problem. The transponder chip inside it was not the right one for this vehicle. On Ford's immobilizer system, a chip that is close but not correct can pass the initial enrollment because the system does a basic verification at programming time. The deeper verification happens over subsequent drive cycles. That's when the car rejects it and you start getting the intermittent failures she was seeing.
I read the chip in her bad replacement key with my programmer right there on the curb, confirmed it was wrong for this application, and built her a new key using the correct transponder matched to the factory FCC ID on her fob. Her original fob also had a dying CR2032 that was contributing to the short range she had been ignoring for months. Swapped that out while I was already in the fob.
Tested everything: door handle touch unlock on both sides, push-to-start, all five buttons, and the backup console slot. All good. Done in the Pierpont neighborhood, on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her.
She asked me why the first locksmith's key even worked at all for eight days. Honest answer: sometimes a close-but-wrong chip gets lucky on the initial handshake and fools the system short-term. It never lasts.
