Out in Mussel Shoals, right along that stretch of PCH where parking basically means the shoulder, I got a call from a guy who had already had a bad day before I showed up.

He'd searched for a locksmith the week before when his 2017 Escape's fob started acting up. The buttons were inconsistent, the push-to-start was throwing a key-not-detected warning intermittently, and sometimes it cleared on its own. He didn't want to pay dealer prices and wait three days, so he clicked an ad. The tech who showed up quoted one price on the phone and walked away with a lot more of his money. My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. If a key snaps inside the ignition cylinder on an Escape or any Ford with a cylinder-based ignition, the broken piece can be extracted without pulling the whole lock. The trick is getting it out clean so the cylinder isn't damaged in the process, which makes it reusable. Once the fragment is out, I decode the lock and cut a fresh replacement key to match.
