Out in Mussel Shoals, right along that stretch of PCH where parking basically means the shoulder, I got a call from a guy who had already had a bad day before I showed up.
He'd searched for a locksmith the week before when his 2017 Escape's fob started acting up. The buttons were inconsistent, the push-to-start was throwing a key-not-detected warning intermittently, and sometimes it cleared on its own. He didn't want to pay dealer prices and wait three days, so he clicked an ad. The tech who showed up quoted one price on the phone and walked away with a lot more of his money. The fob "worked" when the guy left, but within two days the remote buttons were dead again. The car would start, but he was back to using the door key blade manually every time.

He mentioned that mostly as an observation, not a complaint, because by that point the car was already working.
