I got a call from a guy parked near Surfers Point, right by the Ventura Pier end of things. He had one key left for his 2009 Escape and it had been giving him grief for a while.

Then I did the part he didn't ask for but got anyway. I walked the full range test, tried both lock and unlock, then ran the start sequence twice to confirm the immobilizer was still reading the key correctly after the battery swap. Everything held.

He mentioned a dealer had quoted him a replacement key at a number that made him laugh out loud. He didn't need a replacement. He needed the right fix done right there in the lot. That's the difference between throwing parts at a problem and actually diagnosing it.
