I got a call from a woman parked near the laundromat off Gonzales Road in the Wagon Wheel area of Oxnard. Her 2006 Fusion had been acting strange for about a week and a half after she had a key made by another locksmith.
It started fine in the morning. By evening, it was giving her a key-not-detected warning and she'd have to sit there cycling the ignition, sometimes two or three times, before the car would cooperate.
She had already convinced herself it was an electrical gremlin. Wiring, maybe. Or something with the ignition switch.
When I got there and pulled the fob apart, the CR2032 was low but that wasn't the whole story. I ran a read on the transponder chip in her key. What was in there was not the right chip for this application. It was close enough that the car accepted it during the initial programming session, but Ford's immobilizer does a deeper verification after a few drive cycles, and a chip that's merely close doesn't stay trusted. The other locksmith had grabbed a generic that looked compatible on paper.
I cut and programmed a new remote head key using the correct transponder, ran through the full session so both her keys were registered together, and swapped the battery in her existing fob while I was at it. Then I did what I always do before I call a job done: tested the remote functions on both fobs, confirmed the engine started clean, and watched her drive one loop through the lot.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her wince. She paid a fraction of that, right there in the parking lot, no tow, no waiting room.
The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is getting the chip right the first time.
