A customer over in the Via Marina neighborhood in Oxnard was at the laundromat when her 2006 Fusion started acting possessed. Key would fire the engine in the morning, but by evening the theft light on the dash would blink rapid and the car would crank but refuse to start. She thought it was electrical. It wasn't.
Another locksmith had cut her a key a week earlier. It worked at first. Then it didn't.
I pulled her fob apart on the hood and read the chip with my VVDI2. That told the whole story. The previous guy had loaded a generic 4D chip instead of the correct 4D-63 40-bit transponder that Ford's PATS system expects in this car. On Ford's security, a close-but-wrong chip can pass the initial handshake and even start the car for a few days. But after a handful of drive cycles, the PCM runs a deeper verification and locks it out. Classic intermittent failure that makes people think their car is dying.
I programmed a new OUCD6000022 remote head key with the right 4D-63 chip matched to her Fusion's PATS module. Her CR2032 in the old fob was also reading low, which was killing remote range and making the lock button work while unlock did nothing. Swapped that too.
She's been driving on that key for months. The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is the chip inside it.
