I was parked near the auto parts store off Saviers in Blackstock when the call came in. Guy said he'd already paid a locksmith once and the job wasn't done right. That's a specific kind of frustrating, and I could hear it.
He had a 2009 Ford Fusion. Found some ad online, called it, got a price on the phone that sounded reasonable. The tech who showed up had no visible credentials, quoted a different number once he was standing at the car, and left him with a key that would crank the engine but had three dead buttons. Lock, unlock, panic, all of it, nothing. The guy had been manually locking his doors for two weeks.
First thing he asked me when I picked up was how to verify I was real. Completely fair. I gave him my BSIS license number while we were still talking, told him to look it up on the state site. He did, right there on the phone. By the time I pulled up he already knew I was legitimate.
I checked the fob first. The transponder side had registered during the previous attempt, which is why the car started, but the remote functions hadn't completed. The prior tech got halfway through and either didn't know or didn't care. I ran the full sequence with my programmer, both sides of the key confirmed, walked the buttons one at a time. Lock worked. Unlock worked. Third button worked.
He stood there clicking it like he was testing it, then clicked it again. Then looked at me. I told him it was done.
What I charged was what I quoted on the phone. He mentioned the dealer figure he'd looked up, said I was a fraction of that. I told him the mobile rate is just different, and I come to you anyway.
