2007 Ford Fusion
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

It's a key where the fob and the ignition key are one piece -- the transponder chip sits inside the plastic head, and the remote buttons are on the same unit. Your 2007 Fusion uses this style. The chip talks to the vehicle's security system when you turn the ignition. The remote side uses a CR2032 battery for the lock and unlock signal.

Q: My Ford is showing a key-not-detected warning. What do I do?

Start with the CR2032 in the fob -- a weak battery can cause erratic behavior from the remote side, but that's usually a range problem, not a no-start. If the car is cranking and dying, or showing the warning at the ignition, that's the transponder side and a battery swap won't help. Don't keep cycling the ignition trying to force it through.

Q: I have a spare key that worked fine, but now it won't start the car. Did it go bad on its own?

It happens. Keys that sit unused for a long time can develop issues -- the battery in the remote side runs down, but more relevant to the no-start problem, some owners find that a spare stored in a drawer for years has developed a hairline crack in the plastic head that shifts the chip. On the 2007 Fusion, the chip needs to be in a consistent position inside the key head for the security system to read it reliably.

Q: Can I program a second key myself if I already have one working key?

No. The 2007 Fusion does not have a user-accessible self-programming mode for adding keys. Some earlier Ford models had an ignition-turn sequence that let you enroll a second key at home, but the Fusion's security system requires a tool connected to the OBD port to write a new key into memory. If someone tells you there's a button sequence or a turn-the-key trick that works on this car, they're thinking of a different vehicle.

2007 Ford Fusion Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy over in the Wilson neighborhood of Oxnard. He'd ordered a replacement key online after his original snapped at the base of the blade, right where the plastic meets the metal.

The new key showed up, he took it to a hardware store to get it cut, and it went into the ignition just fine. Car cranked. Then died. He tried it four more times before he stopped.

That's the part that worries me when I hear it. The immobilizer does not respond well to repeated failed attempts, and this guy was lucky he hadn't pushed it further.

I pulled up in the Wilson area, verified ownership, and got to work. Decoded the existing lock, cut a proper replacement blade to spec. Then I connected to the OBD port and ran the key learn sequence through the security system. The countdown is built into the system -- there's a timed wait you can't rush, so I just let it run while I talked him through what happened with the hardware store key. The cut was actually decent. The problem was never the blade. It was that the chip inside needed to be enrolled, and nobody told him that when he ordered it.

After the sequence finished, I tested the start three times in a row, then walked the remote functions -- lock, unlock, and the third button -- from a good distance away. Everything confirmed clean.

He asked why I tested it so many times. I told him intermittent problems hide. Three clean starts back to back tells me a lot more than one. He said the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment. I had him done in one visit, same afternoon, for way less.

Ford Fusion Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. On the 2007 Fusion, the ignition cylinder is in the steering column, and a broken key in there is a recoverable situation. I extract the broken fragment without pulling the whole cylinder if the lock hasn't been damaged.
