I was parked off Saviers Road heading into South Winds when the call came in. Guy said his 2012 Fusion fob had been getting flaky for about two weeks. Lock button worked, unlock was hit or miss, and that morning the car threw a key-not-detected warning at him in the parking lot near the channel. He'd already bought a replacement fob online and wanted to know if I could just program it.
I drove out to him. He met me in the lot, handed me the fob, and I could see the blade had some wear at the tip. The battery was the original CR2032, which on a 12-year-old car is not a surprise. Swapped the cell first before touching anything else, cleaned the contacts, and tested the original fob. Lock and unlock came right back. Range was solid from across the lot.
The aftermarket fob he ordered online was still in the box. I told him I'd register it as a second key so he'd have a spare, which is the smarter move anyway. Pulled out the diagnostic tool, connected at the OBD port, erased the key memory, and registered both fobs fresh. Two clean starts, walked the buttons on each fob, confirmed range on both.
He asked what the dealer had quoted him. He'd called them before finding me. I told him what I hear every time: a lot more, plus a wait for parts, plus the tow if the car wouldn't start. He nodded like that tracked. We were done in under an hour, in the lot, no tow, no appointment.
The online fob he bought did work after programming. I don't always recommend going that route because the quality is uneven, but this one was fine. He left with two working keys and didn't have to leave South Winds to get it done.
