Got a call from a mechanic shop over on the Westside neighborhood in Ventura. A 2015 Fusion was sitting in their bay with a dead smart key situation, and it had already been touched by another locksmith. That tech had started an all-keys-lost procedure, the car battery sagged mid-programming, and the BCM on this generation (module part number DG9T-15604, for the curious) threw a security fault and locked up. The other guy left.
When I got there, the Fusion was showing "No Key Detected" and would not crank. I hooked my jump pack to the battery posts first. Non-negotiable step on these. Then I cleared the stored DTCs with my IM608 before touching anything else. A dirty restart on a half-written PATS parameter just compounds the problem.
Once the BCM was clean and voltage was stable at 12.6, I ran a fresh all-keys-lost sequence. The new 5-button M3N-A2C31243300 fob registered on the first pass. Push button start, door handles, trunk release, all checked out.
I walked the shop guys through why the voltage drop killed the first attempt. The PATS security handshake on these second-gen Fusions is time-sensitive. If the BCM loses power in that window, it can fault out hard enough that some techs think it needs a dealer reflash. It usually does not. It just needs a clean slate and stable power.
Took about an hour and a half. Longer than a normal key job, but a fraction of what the dealer route plus a flatbed ride would have cost him.
