A remote head key is exactly what it sounds like: a traditional key blade attached to a fob-style head that houses both the transponder chip and the remote entry electronics. Your 2010 Fusion uses one. It turns in an ignition cylinder like a conventional key, but there's a transponder inside the head that the vehicle security system reads at startup. You need a tool. The 2010 Fusion does have an onboard key programming procedure, but it only works if you already have two working programmed keys in hand. If you have two good keys, you can add a third through an ignition-turn sequence without any external equipment. If you only have one key, or zero, that onboard trick is off the table. At that point, programming requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port.

Q: My remote buttons stopped working but the key still starts the car. Do I need a full replacement?

Not necessarily. The remote entry side and the ignition side of your key operate independently. If the car starts fine, the transponder and that part of the system are doing their job.
