A woman near Historic Plaza Park in Oxnard flagged me down after a Sunday service. She'd already paid another locksmith for a 2010 Ford Fusion key that never actually worked. The car would crank, run for about two seconds, then the PATS immobilizer killed fuel injection. Textbook failed security learn. The other tech told her the PCM had a module problem and left.

Ford's PATS on this generation Fusion uses an in-code and out-code exchange through the OBD-II port, followed by a timed security countdown, usually around ten minutes. If you rush it or skip the final write step, the PCM accepts the key data temporarily but never commits it to permanent memory. So the key looks learned, starts the car once or twice, then the theft light starts flashing and the engine dies.
I used my HU101 Lishi to verify the mechanical cut was correct, then connected my IM608 through OBD. Cleared the failed key data from the previous attempt, ran a clean PATS learn with the full security timer, and confirmed the new OUCD6000022 was written permanently. All three buttons working, clean start, no two-second fuel cutoff.
I showed her the confirmation screen so she could see the key count registered correctly in the PCM. She just stared at the dash for a second like she was waiting for it to quit again.
She'd already paid the first locksmith too. I couldn't help with that part. But I could make sure the job was actually done right, on site, for way less than the dealer route.
